Arsenic trioxide reduces the invasive and metastatic properties of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells in vitro BJMBR
Du,C.W.; Wen,B.G.; Li,D.R.; Peng,X.; Hong,C.Q.; Chen,J.Y.; Lin,Z.Z.; Hong,X.; Lin,Y.C.; Xie,L.X.; Wu,M.Y.; Zhang,H..
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is notorious for the metastases, which are in close association with Epstein-Barr virus-encoded latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1). Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) has been shown to induce apoptosis and differentiation in NPC xenografts. Then, can it repress the cancer cells' metastasis potential? To elucidate this issue, the present study was performed. LMP1-negative cell line HNE1 and LMP1-positive cell line HNE1-LMP1 were used as in vitro model. Cells (1 x 10(5)/mL) were cultured with or without 3 µM As2O3 for 48 h. Then the survival cells were collected to investigate their potential of colony formation, attachment, invasion, and migration. Both confocal immunofluorescence staining and Western blot were used to detect the changes...

Detection of sputum cofilin-1 as indicator of malignancy BJMBR
Rangel,M.P.; Antonangelo,L.; Acencio,M.M.P.; Faria,C.S.; de Sá,V.K.; Leão,P.S.; Farhat,C.; Fabro,A.T.; Longatto Filho,A.; Reis,R.M.; Takagaki,T.; Capelozzi,V.L..
Cofilin-1 (CFL1), a small protein of 18 kDa, has been studied as a biomarker due to its involvement in tumor cell migration and invasion. Our aim was to evaluate CFL1 as an indicator of malignancy and aggressiveness in sputum samples. CFL1 was analyzed by ELISA immunoassay in the sputum of 73 lung cancer patients, 13 cancer-free patients, and 6 healthy volunteers. Statistical analyses included ANOVA, ROC curves, Spearman correlation, and logistic regression. Sputum CFL1 levels were increased in cancer patients compared to cancer-free patients and volunteers (P<0.05). High expression of sputum CFL1 was correlated to T4 stage (P=0.01) and N stage (P=0.03), tobacco history (P=0.01), and squamous cell carcinoma histologic type (P=0.04). The accuracy of...

Paullinia cupana Mart var. sorbilis, guaraná, reduces cell proliferation and increases apoptosis of B16/F10 melanoma lung metastases in mice BJMBR
Fukumasu,H.; Avanzo,J.L.; Nagamine,M.K.; Barbuto,J.A.; Rao,K.V.; Dagli,M.L.Z..
We showed that guaraná (Paullinia cupana Mart var. sorbilis) had a chemopreventive effect on mouse hepatocarcinogenesis and reduced diethylnitrosamine-induced DNA damage. In the present experiment, we evaluated the effects of guaraná in an experimental metastasis model. Cultured B16/F10 melanoma cells (5 x 10(5) cells/animal) were injected into the tail vein of mice on the 7th day of guaraná treatment (2.0 mg P. cupana/g body weight, per gavage) and the animals were treated with guaraná daily up to 14 days until euthanasia (total treatment time: 21 days). Lung sections were obtained for morphometric analysis, apoptotic bodies were counted to calculate the apoptotic index and proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells were counted to determine the...

Relation of Breast Cancer and Malathion Aerial Spraying in Arica, Chile International Journal of Morphology
Cabello,Gertrudis; Valenzuela-Estrada,Mario; Siques,Patricia; Brito,Julio; Parra,Eduardo; Valdivia,Ursula; Lavin,Claudia; Manríquez,Alejandra; Ortega,Alejandro.
Breast cancer mortality has been increasing in Arica Chile where it has surpassed the national rates 11 times between 1990 and 2010. The city of Arica was sprayed with the organophosphrous pesticide malathion in order to control the Mediterranean fly 33 years ago. Moreover we have demonstrated that a malathion treatment induces the formation of breast carcinomas in Sprague Dowley female rats. The objective of this work was to find a relationship between malathion aerial spraying and the increased mortality rate due to breast cancer that has been observed in Arica in recent years. We extracted city data bases with all breast cancer cases diagnosed from 1995 to 2005 from the Dr. Juan Noe Crevani Hospital of Arica city and Ernesto Torres Hospital of Iquique....
